Οur Cooperation produces only the “Koroneiki” variety olive oil in class: extra virgin olive oil equipped with the Protected Designation of Origin “PETRINA” .
Owing to school teacher Stylianos Koutoupis’ perspicacity, the idea of a cooperative society came into being in 1907. By 1915 the society was founded and named “
AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE of
PETRINA
”, being the first agricultural co-operative in Greece. In 1938, “
AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE of PETRINA”
implemented in Greece a procedure of pressing olive oil, which has stayed unique until today. The Petrina farmers’ idea is
joint pressing of all olives
from admission to the press. It was a great and impressive achievement in the evolution of cooperative concept succeeding in improving the quality of olive oil, the better utilization of the olive mill and the social cohesion of its members. The oil produced in our Cooperative is probably the first Greek olive oil already equipped since 1996 with brand-name identity, which certified its name origin. The “Protected Designation of Origin” is the name of an area used as a designation for an agricultural product or a foodstuff, which comes from such an area and whose quality or properties are significantly or exclusively determined by the geographical environment, including natural and human factors. The production, processing and preparation takes place within the determined geographical area.
The olive oil “
PETRINA
” was initially certified in the Greek State with the No 317714/14-1-1994 ministerial decree of the Ministry of Agriculture published in Government Gazette (No 17/14-1-1994), according to which «The indication “PETRINA Protected Designation of Origin’’, can be used to describe extra-virgin olive oil produced from olive variety “Koroneiki”, which is cultivated within the administrative boundaries of the Community (now the municipal district of the Municipality of Eastern Mani) Petrina of Laconia».
In 1996, the olive oil
PETRINA
also acquired European Union’s CERTIFICATE REGISTRATION as a
Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)
published in Official Journal of European Union (No L 148, 21.6.1996) signed by Franz Fischler, the then European Union’s Commissioner for the Agriculture and rural Development.
